ISA/IEC 62443

Secure industrial automation and control systems across their lifecycle.

Overview

ISA/IEC 62443: what it is and why it matters

International standard series · Information Security

The ISA/IEC 62443 series addresses cybersecurity for industrial automation and control systems and operational technology throughout their lifecycle. It takes a risk-based approach across technology, processes and people, and uses security levels as a core concept.

It addresses asset owners, system integrators, product suppliers and service providers, which is why the same standard appears in plant security programmes, procurement requirements and product development.

Certification pathway

Training, examination and certification are different steps

IEC 62443 is a standard series. ISA offers personal certificate programmes of its own, and the IEC runs a separate conformity assessment programme (IECEE) for products and systems. PECB publishes an ISA/IEC 62443 Lead Implementer programme. These are different offerings with different rules.

  • ISA publishes four specialist certificates; completing all four earns an Expert designation.
  • PECB publishes an IEC 62443 Lead Implementer course (5 days, with an 80-question multiple-choice exam and 70% pass mark in its handbook).
  • Product and system conformity is assessed under the IEC programme, not through personal training.

Certification bodies set and can change their own exam, eligibility and renewal rules. The details below are what the body publishes; we confirm the current position with you before you enrol.

Frequently asked questions

Is IEC 62443 the same as ISO/IEC 27001?

No. ISO/IEC 27001 is for information security management in general. IEC 62443 addresses industrial automation and control systems and recognises that IT standards are not always appropriate for OT.

What is a security level?

A core concept of the series used to express the protection a system or component is designed to provide. The parts of the series define how levels are used.

Who does the series apply to?

Asset owners, system integrators, product suppliers and service providers, each through different parts.
